One Knight

I rode this mount from far to here

to claim the one I should be near.

I cried out her name to the palace guards

and was terrified by their words.

To me they cried, "This one you seek is inside,

but she to you will be denied."

At that sound I shuttered to my soul,

but vowed to free her from those trolls.

The guards again cried down

saying I was not fit for a crown.

They gestured of a crown that was not about my head

and she will with only royalty bed.

They knew not the heart that beat in my chest

or how far I would go without rest.

My valor, honor and pride could not be diminished

until I saw this battle to its’ finish.

At mornings’ first breath to the gate I again rode,

holding my shield, lance and a rose.

"Open this wall or face the wrath of my ire

for I’m here to claim the one I desire.

I hold in my hand a rose for my queen

and a lance for the heart for those who come between.

Stand aside and let her hear my plea

and upon her words I will flee."

With thunder from the Gods the wall yielded down

revealing my heart in a white cotton gown.

My voice cracked as I called for her hand

with the promise of a life that would never have walls again.

Let no fortress keep two lovers apart

and no man stand in the way of like hearts.

Let no pillow know the loneliness I’ve seen

or bear the hurt of living a lonesome dream.

Let no night fall that you don’t call her name

and awake to the comfort of her breath again.

Let those who seek to fulfill their hearts

stand at the gate and speak of their part.

If their answer be no then let them be gone,

but if their answer is yes, then leave them alone.
