Moffitt
An Encounter with the Author
Each of the pieces in this series is subtitled as another encounter with Moffitt. While not overtly concealed or openly stated the central idea of each piece is not the encounter with someone referred to as Moffitt. The theme and central idea are all intertwined in the labyrinth and mine field that is the psyche of the speaker. In the mind of the author these pieces are the opposing images of the Rothshambeau series of pieces he has also written. Where Rothshambeau pieces are about purity, ethics, values and respect, the Moffitt series is about greed, paranoia and the loathing of virtue and honesty.
There are many Moffitts in our lives. Yours may be the driver of the car that approaches with bright lights or a co-worker who always seams to come out on top. You may find someone in your own family to be a Moffitt. Your loathing and distaste for them and their morality may stir you to sickness. Their lack of concern for their fellow man or for those less fortunate may drive you insane. Their unsolicited forgiveness may lie in your stomach like a burning ember that has to be quenched.
On that day when life’s burdens become so great that you can stand to hold back no longer, when you think you might explode, you will then understand the momentum that has forced the speakers in the Moffitt series to lash out. This unfounded rage may be based on any of the basic elements of humanity that we all detest; greed, selfishness, boastfulness, self-righteousness, envy, self pity, or shame.
You may have meet or still know a Moffitt. We all have them in our lives. Yours may never tip the scale and force you across the line between reasonable or allowable thinking, over to the unacceptable behavior demonstrated by the speakers in this series. You may have stepped over the line at sometimes in the past and remember that day with regret and remorse. You may be like many of these speakers were and are proud that you faced your demon. The experience may even be fresher to you. Today may be the day you can’t stand the pressure any longer. You may confront your Moffitt at the next encounter.
Who knows, you may be someone’s Moffitt. Your idiosyncrasies and annoying habits may be driving someone you know to the brink of insanity. Their loathing may be about to erupt. The next time they encounter you they might have to unload the burden that has became so overwhelming. You, yes you Moffitt, you know who I’m talking to and don’t act like you don’t. You are the cause of all of this from the beginning. If you could read I wouldn’t have to explain myself. So now! Go read the Moffitt series and don’t come here again. I’ve explained all you need to know.
